The physicians and staff of Lutheran Medical Group have been treating conditions and illnesses that affect the heart, such as heart attacks, heart failure and irregular heartbeats, for area patients for close to 40 years. LMG’s founder, Robert E. Swint Sr., MD, was the first board-certified cardiologist in Fort Wayne. Over the years, the group has grown to include an array of cardiologists who provide general, invasive and interventional services, along with electrophysiologists, cardiologists who diagnose and treat irregular heartbeats and other conditions that can lead to cardiac arrest. All of LMG’s cardiologists have received specialized training and are committed to providing patients the best heart care possible.

General Cardiologists
General cardiologists, also known as noninvasive cardiologists, treat patients in the office. They examine patients and order tests to prevent, diagnose and treat heart conditions. General cardiologists will continue to see patients whose conditions can be managed with medications and lifestyle changes, but if a procedure of some kind is needed, patients are transferred to another cardiologist.

Invasive Cardiologists
Invasive cardiologists, also known as noninterventional cardiologists, also order tests, but if a heart catheterization is required to check for blocked arteries, invasive cardiologists can perform the procedure. If invasive cardiologists find blockage, patients are referred to an interventional cardiologist.

Interventional Cardiologists
Interventional cardiologists, who have received three years of additional training, perform, in additional to heart catheterizations, advanced heart procedures, including balloon (angioplasties) and stent placement procedures. They can also perform valve repairs and remove plaque (atheroectomies). Although interventional cardiologists spend most of their time in the hospital, they do see patients in the office for consultations and follow-up visits.
