Maurits J. Wiersema, MD, FACG, FACP
After completing a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., Maurits J. Wiersema earned a medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1986. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine in 1988 and a fellowship in gastroenterology in 1991 at Indiana University Hospitals, where he was also chief medicine resident in 1991.
Before joining Lutheran Medical Group in September 2010, Dr. Wiersema practiced at Indiana Medical Associates. Dr. Wiersema began his career in private practice in Indianapolis, where he worked from 1993 to 1998 before joining the staff of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., a position he held for four years. He then joined GI Consultants in Fort Wayne in 2002, and he joined IMA in March 2005.
Dr. Wiersema, who is board certified in gastroenterology, is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, Alpha Omega Alpha, the Indiana State Medical Association and the Fort Wayne Medical Society.
